TOE Course Locations

Bristol Royal Infirmary
Five day non-residential courses provide an introduction to the use of transoesophageal echocardiography in both theatre and ITU settings by a multidisciplinary faculty. These are predominantly practical hands on in-theatre courses for a maximum of 4 candidates that concentrate on basic image acquisition and interpretation. Previous echocardiography experience is not essential. Courses are approved for 10 external CEPD points. Course directors Dr AT Lovell and Dr SPK Linter.

Cambridge, Papworth Hospital
We run four to five hands-on training courses each year with a maximum of two candidates per course. Three types of course are offered. All courses last three days and generally run from Monday to Wednesday.

1. 'Basic' hands-on training course for cardiac anaesthetists
2. 'Basic' hands-on training course for intensivists
3. 'Intermediate Refresher' course for consultant cardiac anaesthetists with previous TOE training

An introductory five day course with an emphasis on teaching the practical skills of image acquisition. Hands-on instruction in theatres and ITU is reinforced by tutorials and audiovisual teaching material. Courses run ten times a year and participants are limited to 2 per course.

The course is a mixture of "hands on" teaching and lectures. Basic training will be provided, but the course will be adapted for those more experienced in echocardiography. Places are limited to six per course. Initial application by email is preferred.
