CLINICAL FELLOWSHIPS IN CARDIAC ANAESTHESIA AND INTENSIVE CARE

Location

Southampton

Expiry Date

11-Aug-2008

Description

These Fellowship posts are of a minimum of six months duration and are based in the Wessex Cardiac Centre at Southampton University Hospitals NHS Trust. The unit is undergoing an extensive £50M expansion, which includes an increase from 12 to 24 ICU beds and 12 to 15 all day theatre lists. Caseload includes 1500 adult surgical procedures and 350 paediatric procedures annually.

The posts combine research and clinical duties. Generally, 1 day is a protected research day and 3 days are for clinical work each week. The clinical component provides training in cardiac anaesthesia and cardiac intensive care, and includes on-call cover for the adult cardiac intensive care unit.

Clinical Opportunities

The posts offer wide exposure to all types of acquired adult and congenital cardiac disease with the exception of cardiac transplantation. There is close involvement with the diagnosis and surgical or cardiological interventional management of cardiac disease. There are considerable opportunities for perioperative anaesthetic and intensive care management, including the placement of arterial and central venous lines, and pulmonary artery catheterisation. The Fellowship will also provide experience in postoperative transoesophageal echocardiography, cardiac output monitoring, the manipulation of multiple inotropes in the complex postoperative cardiac patient, the use of nitric oxide, intra-aortic balloon counterpulsation, ECMO and other mechanical circulatory assistance, the management of veno-venous haemodiafiltration and the insertion of percutaneous tracheostomies.

These posts do not have educational approval from the Postgraduate Dean and do not carry a National Training Number.

Applicants will be expected to demonstrate their competence to communicate in spoken and written English.

Where equivalent qualifications or experience are being offered, it is essential that candidates provide confirmation of this from the relevant College or Faculty in the United Kingdom and attach confirmation to their application.
