Five day non-residential courses provide an introduction to the use of transoesophageal echocardiography in both theatre and ITU settings by a multidisciplinary faculty. These are predominantly practical hands on in-theatre courses for a maximum of 4 candidates that concentrate on basic image acquisition and interpretation. We run five hands-on training courses each year with a maximum of two candidates per course. Three types of course are offered. All courses last three days and generally run from Monday to Wednesday. 1. 'Basic' hands-on training course for cardiac anaesthetists 2. 'Basic' hands-on training course for intensivists 3. This is a practical, five day, perioperative TOE course held twice a year in May and October. Delegates can expect extensive, hands-on, use of TOE in cardiac theatres, critical care areas, cardiology catheter lab and cardiology outpatient clinics. The course includes lectures, tutorials, a wet-lab with porcine heart dissection and the use of a TOE simulator. Typical TOE courses include all aspects of practical training for the beginner to get started and make intra-operative interpretation. For more advanced practitioners there is training in 3D TOE. The case-mix will include intensive care patients. A wet-lab will be used to refresh anatomical knowledge. The course includes a social programme and encourages interactive teaching. Training is recognised by ACTA and BSE and forms part of the TOE accreditation process. It is credited for 20 CME points. This is a hands-on, six day, perioperative TOE course held four times per year. Places are limited to six. The course includes all aspects of practical training for the beginner to get started and interpret intra-operative information. Previous echocardiography experience is not essential but the course can also be adapted for more experienced practitioners e.g. additional training in 3D TOE. The course is suitable for Anaesthetists, Surgeons, Cardiologists, Intensivists and Cardiology technicians. Delegates can expect hands-on use of TOE in cardiac operating theatres, adult critical care unit, and the adult and congenital cardiology catheter laboratory. The course includes lectures, tutorials and a porcine heart wet-lab dissection. The course encourages interactive teaching and includes a course dinner. Wythensahwe Hospital, Manchester's North West hand's-on TOE course is a three, half day non-residential course. It is a mixture of hands on and lectures with both anaesthetic and cardiology input. No previous experience is required and can be tailored to suit the knowledge base of the delegates as there is a maximum of four per course. 3D teaching is also available for the more experienced. This is a two-day course aimed at cardiac physiologists, cardiologists, physicians, cardiac anaesthetists, intensivists and cardiothoracic surgeons. The course is packed with lectures on echo pathology and case reviews. The course includes lectures on Mitral and Aortic valve disease, Prosthetic valve dysfunction, endocarditis, ASD/PFO, GUCH, TAVI/Mitral-clip and case-based review sessions. Emphasis will be placed on the practical aspects of performing a TOE including a dedicated lecture on getting the views and several hands-on sessions with the Heartworks TOE simulators. There are also sessions with training on 3D workstations. The course provides vital revision for anyone intending to sit the accreditation exam at the BSE/EACTA meetings. |

The Nottingham TOE Refresher Course is the exam preparatory course towards the TOE accreditation exam conducted by the British Society of Echocardiography. It is a two days course encompassing two mock exams with MCQ and Video loops to cover the syllabus for the exam and a series of lectures covering the major topics with numerous example studies with an emphasis on the exam. This has been a successful course with good feedback in the past. The course has been approved in the past by the Royal College of Anaesthetists and was awarded 10 CPD credits last year.
